In July 1988, a meeting prompted by Alf Scrafton and attended by 4 others was the beginning for Northumbrian Scribes. Bede Monastery Museum, now Bede's World, was the only place that was prepared to allow the use of a room, a fortunate occurrence that has great significance for our members. We are very conscious of the historical connection with Bede and the Wearmouth/Jarrow monasteries and the importance of their scriptoria.
It is still pleasing that our presence and our activities at Bede's World were cited in the granting of public money for phase 1 of its new building. The FSA was quoted in its press release "the Foundation was please to find a major arts project in the North East which could enhance the public's knowledge of illuminated manuscripts" . . . "it was this, plus the fact that we, the Museum, had an active group of calligraphers which caught the attention and it was a unique application."
Our principle aim is to foster calligraphy and our varied activities sustain this. Our monthly meetings are mainly practical workshops. Our summer exhibition gives all members an opportunity to display their calligraphy and enjoy the work of others.
When there was a cut in leisure classes, we sustained our own calligraphy class over many years. For current classes, please refer to the Classes page.
Opportunities for members to publish through co-operative projects has resulted in a number of publications including The Book of Escomb. Please see the Membership page.
In June 2001, we changed our name to The Society of Northumbrian Scribes but we still strive to promote the enjoyment, practice and study of calligraphy not only for our members but also for a wider audience.
